  • Dodge City High School lineman Justin Gemaelich was named to the 2013 Kansas Shrine Bowl to be played in July at Washburn University.
“I found out early Christmas Eve morning that I was going to play,” Gemaehlich said. “It was a pretty dang good way to start my Christmas off.”
Gemaehlich was an all-Western Athletic Conference offensive lineman for the Red Demons that helped the team average more than 372 yards a game; and also was the foundation for the defensive line of the Mad Hatters in the 2012 season (78 tackles, two fumble recoveries and one interception).
Gemachlich was nominated by Dodge City High football head coach Dave Foster to play in the bowl, scheduled for July 27 at Yager Stadium.
“I wouldn’t have even expected it if Foster hadn’t told me,” Gemaehlich said. “He told me that he nominated me and I was on top of the world. It just shocked me. It was just a great honor.
Gemaehlich is undecided on where he plans to attend college to play football. His short list include Kansas State, Fort Hays State or either Butler or Hutchinson Community College. He said he plans on making his decision by the end of the holiday break.
Trey Hallman represented DCHS in the 2012 Shrine Bowl and Mykael Thompson was the West’s Most Valuable Player in the 2008 game. Other recent invitee from Dodge City include Jesse Trent (2011) and Landon Head (2010).
Other area players in the Shrine Bowl are Hays’ David Cardinal and Hunter Harrison of Great Bend. Hays head coach Ryan Cornelsen is the head coach of the West squad.
The West squad has won the previous seven games, including a 14-7 victory last year at Fort Hays State’s Lewis Field.
