Dan E. Willms, 73, died Monday, Dec. 31, 2012 at Medicine Lodge Memorial Hospital, Medicine Lodge. He was born Oct. 2, 1939 in Medicine Lodge, the son of Wallace H. Willms and Gertie (Raleigh) Willms.
Willms worked for the federal government as a USDA meat inspector for 32 years. He was Methodist by faith, a member of the Delta Lodge, #77, Masonic and former member of the Medicine Lodge City Council. He had many interests, including fishing, hunting, and cooking, however his real passion was rodeo. As a member of the Dodge City Round-Up Club and the Kansas Professional Rodeo Association, Willms spent many years competing in and eventually judging numerous rodeos throughout Kansas, Oklahoma, and Texas.
Surviving are his wife, Tonja Willms of Medicine Lodge; three sons, Terry (Julie) Willms of St. Paul, Minn., Mike (Anne) Willms of Haysville, and Brian (Dawn) Willms of Dublin, Ohio; one daughter, Beverly (Paul) Nobrega of Overland Park; two step-daughters, Dusty & Daisy Carlson of Medicine Lodge; 14 grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents and one son, Gerald “Jerry” Willms.
Cremation has taken place. A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, Jan. 4, 2013 at the United Methodist Church, Medicine Lodge, with Pastor Dale Thiele officiating. Inurnment will follow in Highland Cemetery, Medicine Lodge.
