  • The Dodge City Conquistadors were outscored 14-1 by the Northwest Tech Mavericks to start the second half and were never able to recover in a 77-68 setback.
The Conqs had won their last three games before the holiday break, but couldn't find an answer to stop the 1-2 shooting punch of Jeffrey Burgos and Marcus Walden in falling in their final game before conference action starts Saturday night.
Walden scored 19 points and Burgos added 18 and grabbed 10 rebounds as the Mavericks (7-12) were hit 10 3-point baskets against the Dodge City defense.
Vic Adams led Dodge City (8-6) in scoring with 19 points, while Delvon Rencher added 15 and Jacoby Green 10 in the loss.
Adams started strong against the Mavericks, hitting three 3-pointers as the Conqs built a 15-10 lead; before Northwest scored five points in less than 45 seconds to tie the game.
The two teams traded leads for the remainder of the half with the Mavericks scoring a couple of late baskets to lead 39-35 at halftime. Adams didn't score any more points after his hot start, but still led the Conqs in that category, while Rencher and Crockett added seven points apiece. Burgos had 13 points and five rebounds to lead Northwest, while Walden added eight points and four boards for the halftime margin.
The Conqs didn't make a field goal until more than six minutes after intermission on a 3-pointer by Connor Carman to help get a six-point run to cut the margin to 12. Dodge City was able to cut the margin back to double digits at 72-63 with 4:45 remaining in regulation and got the score down to six with two minutes on the clock before the Mavericks closed out the game to pick up the win.
The Conqs will face No. 4-nationally ranked Hutchinson in their conference opener Saturday night at the United Wireless Arena. Tipoff is scheduled for 8 p.m.
