  • The Dodge City Lady Conquistadors are having to redefine their identity with only one non-conference game before Saturday's conference season opener less than three days away.
It wasn't a pretty game for the Lady Conqs as they fell 61-51 to the Northwest Tech Lady Mavericks in the first game after a month-long break from competition.
Dodge City (6-8) beat Northwest Tech by 32 points back in November at the United Wireless Arena, but didn't have its two best scorers in the first meeting between the two teams due to injury (Kesha Buckner, 16 in the first game) or departure of the program (Samantha Herrera, 19 points).
Rodeshia Mouton and Jameeshia Armstrong did their best to lead the Lady Conqs in the rematch game. Mouton scored 15 points and grabbed five rebounds, while Armstrong added 10 points in the loss. Katren Cramer scored eight points and grabbed nine rebounds to lead Dodge City on the boards.
Kelli Tolar, Dodge City's leading scorer going into the game, scored only one point in the loss (the fourth in five games for the Lady Conqs).
The Lady Mavericks were led in scoring by Lefty Rodriguez, who scored 22 points and grabbed four rebounds in her first game with Northwest Tech (2-18) after spending all of last semester trying to get her credit hours up to qualify to play. Mayberry added 13 points and six rebounds, and Watts scored 11 points.
The Lady Conqs made only two field goals in the first 10 minutes of play as Northwest built a 16-9 lead. Dodge City then went on a nine-point run to grab the lead.
The two teams traded the lead over the final six minutes before intermission before the Lady Mavericks scored the final five points of the half to lead 28-25 at intermission.
Mouton scored seven points in the first half, while Armstrong added six for Dodge City, while Rodriguez came off the bench to score 12 points before intermission.
The Lady Conqs will host No. 2-ranked Hutchinson in their first conference game of the season. Tipoff is scheduled for 6 p.m. at the United Wireless Arena.
Dodge City opened up strong in the second half as Armstrong and Mouton helped the Lady Conqs build a 35-32 lead five minutes into the second half. The two teams traded the lead again before Northwest used an 8-1 scoring run to push the lead up to 47-41 with 6:30 left in regulation.
A four-point play by Cramer cut the deficit down to two was as close as Dodge City could cut the deficit before the Lady Mavericks extended their lead to the final score in the contest.
The Lady Conqs will host No. 2-ranked Hutchinson in their first conference game of the season. Tipoff is scheduled for 6 p.m. at the United Wireless Arena.
