There was a short agenda for the first City Commission meeting of the new year. The meeting began with the Water Reclamation Facility receiving a First Place Kansas City Public Improvement Award for 2012. Dodge City was awarded this honor in the 20,000 to 49,999 population category for the new water reclamation facility built on north 14th Ave. Commission members also approved a state/federal legislative policy by a 5-0 vote. This policy is a communication tool that enables our legislators to understand our position on issues here in southwest Kansas. Supplemental #1 to the Dodge City YMCA management agreement was also approved on Monday night. The supplement addresses small issues that have come up and are not covered by the original agreement approved on Nov. 5, such as snow removal and payment of certain utilities. An agreement between Kansas Builders, LLC and the City of Dodge City was also approved by a vote of 5-0. The agreement, which involves the Prairie Point development, states that Kansas Builders have opted not to utilize the Neighborhood Revitalization Program, and instead will keep the property a Rural Housing Incentive District. The property was first approved as a RHID in 2011. The next City Commission meeting will be held on Jan. 21. County Not much was on the County Commission agenda this week either. The Commission approved a bid from Magouirk Chevrolet to purchase a used car for the sheriff's department. A report was given on Ford County Lake. Because there is no water in the lake, police and fire departments would like to close the area off to the public. Officials are worried about fires starting in that area because it is so dry and there is so much brush. Commissioners discussed working with the individuals who maintain the hiking and biking trails around the lake to post signs to allow visitors to see where the trails are, as well as remind them that the lake is closed. No formal decisions have been made yet, and once the lake is filled with water again, it is thought it will be re-opened. Finally a proposal from Kone was approved to repair the elevator in the Ford County Government Center. There will be a special County Commission on Jan 14, and the next regularly scheduled meeting will be held on the 21.
