  • About the event
    1. The Dodge City Family YMCA and the Western Kansas Broad Center are teaming up to host the city's very own dodgeball tournament. According to Richard Falcon, account representative for Western Kansas Broadcast, the DJs with the broadcast center should be credited with the idea for the tournament, which was inspired by the 2004 movie Dodgeball: A True Underdog Story.
    2. Rules and officials for the tournament will be provided by the YMCA. According to Falcon, the set up and orchestration of the tournament will be handled by the YMCA staff. In an effort to even the playing field, teams must be coed with at least three women on each eight member team. Games will be played in tournament format with double elimination. Participants must be at least 14-years-old to play.
    3. All proceeds from the tournament will go to the Ford County Humane Society. "We've been trying to find a way to help the Humane Society for a long time," Falcon said. "The only reason we have the entry fee is to benefit them." The cost is $25 per team.
    Why you should attend
"The tournament is mainly meant to be a fun event," said Randi Clifford executive director of the Dodge City Family YMCA branch. "And it also donates to a local cause, which is great."
Falcon seconded Cliffords comment and said the goal of the tournament is more to have a good time than to have steep competition. And to emphasize that point, a prize for the "best dressed" team will be awarded.
Trophies for first, second and third place will also be given out.
Falcon said foam balls will be used, so participants won't need to have safety concerns. There will also be a live DJ throughout the tournament.
Registration forms can be picked up at the YMCA located at 240 San Jose Drive in Dodge City or downloaded from the West Kansas Broadcast Center website, www.westernkansasnews.com.
The deadline for registration is Friday, Jan. 25.
