  • Sophomore Greg Travis scored 12 points, dished out five assists and stole three passes in the second half to lead the Dodge City Conquistadors to a 70-66 victory over the Colby Trojans in a Jayhawk West showdown at United Wireless Arena. Travis' play helped the Conqs overcome a strong finish in the first half and strong second half by the Trojans, who took the lead the lead early after halftime before Dodge City fought back to build the lead up to 10 late in the contest. "We talked about what we needed out of him; to attack and get to the hoop," said Dodge City head coach Kyle Campbell, who earned his first conference win. "He did a good job of finishing around the hoop in the second half." The Conqs opened the conference season against two ranked opponents, losing in overtime at home to Hutchinson before getting routed by Barton two days later. Dodge City played with the same sense of urgency they did against the Blue Dragons, which was the DCCC coaches were hoping the team would come out after the rout to the Cougars. Dodge City scored 32 points off of 25 Colby turnovers in the game and made five of its six 3-point attempts after intermission. The largest lead for the Conqs was 63-53 late in the contest. Victor Adams led the Conqs (9-8, 1-2) with 17 points, while Travis added 16 points and six assists, Jacoby Green 12 and Aaron Tate 11 to go with eight rebounds despite playing with an injury. "The way we're going to win is to shoot about 13 to 18 3-pointers a game and to get away from shooting in the 20s," Campbell said. "We're finding ways and I think if we can keep guarding like we did tonight, then we're going to be in a lot of games down the stretch." Kris Rolle recorded a double-double with 15 points and 18 rebounds to lead Colby (9-8, 0-3). Terry Starks and Jeremiah Ingram also scored 15 points in the loss, while Brandon Williams added 12. The two teams traded the lead and tied through most of the first half. Dodge City had a late run to build a seven-point lead before Colby whittled the lead down to 31-30 at halftime. Adams scored 10 points as the Conqs shot 12-of-31 from the field before intermission as Dodge City scored 13 points off of turnovers to help keep the lead going into the locker room. Rolle scored nine points and grabbed nine boards in the opening half to lead the Trojans. The Conqs' next game will be a Jayhawk West road game Saturday night against the Pratt Beavers. Tip-off is scheduled for 8 p.m.
