  • The Dodge City Lady Demons couldn't find their shooting touch against Great Bend in a 49-35 Western Athletic Conference setback Friday night at United Wireless Arena.
Dodge City made only 11 of its 41 shots against the Lady Panthers' defense and only four in the first half (three by Ciera Lampe). Great Bend was able to take advantage by hitting their 3-point shots before intermission and scored 10 points off of 14 Dodge City turnovers to build a 30-13 at halftime.
"Playing in an arena like this, it can affect the way you shoot the ball," said DCHS girls basketball head coach Kelley Snodgrass. "When our shots aren't falling, we have to attack them defensively and get to the free throw line.
"We talked about meeting our passes. When we get tired, then our passes fall short. We just have to remain disciplined and run what we need to run."
Lampe scored 13 points and grabbed seven rebounds to lead the Lady Demons (2-5, 0-2) while Alexis Sanchez added 10 with eight boards. Chandra Sain was the only other Dodge City player to make a basket in the loss.
"I was pleased with the way Ciera played for us," Snodgrass said. "She hit her shots and extended the defense, and she's a threat inside as well. We have to have her continue to be aggressive on offense."
Morgan Harwood led Great Bend (5-3, 2-1) with 14 points and Kelsie Doll added 12 in the win. Both players grabbed seven boards with Harwood also stealing the ball five times from the Lady Demons and Doll recording four steals.
The Lady Demons didn't allow a Great Bend basket over the first four minutes of the game, but couldn't take full advantage with only a 3-pointer by Lampe. Great Bend then scored seven straight points off of turnovers on the way to building a 12-6 lead by the end of the stanza. Dodge City's only other points in the period was another 3-pointer by Lampe.
Great Bend dominated most of the second quarter as they used the 3-point shot to extend the lead to a 30-13 margin by halftime. Lampe had three of Dodge City's four field goals in the first half for eight points, while Doll scored 11 to lead Great Bend.
