Alice Laura Bates, 103, formerly of Dodge City, died Tuesday, Jan. 15, 2013 at the Life Care Center of Seneca.
She was born September 23, 1909 in Medora, Kan. the daughter of William and Winifred (Barnes) Reed.
She married V.A. Bates who preceded her in death on August 15, 1988.
She was a loving "granny" who loved to quilt, crochet, read Louie Lamour westerns, go fishing and collect poetry. She is especially remembered for her "biscuits and gravy" and "cornbread" and sitting in the backyard with a cold glass of lemonade.
She is survived by three sons, Jack Alvin Bates of Talihina, Okla., Robert Dennis Bates of Dodge City, and Montie Edward Bates of Sublette; two daughters, Linda Lou Brannan of Seneca, and Verna Sue Weber of Garden City; eleven grandchildren; and 18 great grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by three great grandchildren, John Adam Etcheson, Aaron Jae Etcheson and Landon Parker Bates; four brothers, Chester Reed, Ray Reed, William Reed and Jesse Reed; and four sisters, Mary Wells, Vica Rucker, Ruby Adamson and Harriet Withrow.
Bates has been cremated and an inurnment graveside service will be held at a later date in the Maple Grove Cemetery, Dodge City.
Memorials may be left to the Alice Bates Memorial for Seneca Life Care Center or the charity of their choice and sent in care of the Popkess Memorial Chapel, Seneca.
