Dodge City falls by 22 to Cloud County

The Dodge City Lady Conquistadors continue to have trouble shooting the ball as they continue to search for their identity during the Jayhawk West part of the schedule. The Lady Conqs shot 25 percent (14-of-56) from the field and gave up 24 points off of turnovers as the Cloud County Lady Thunderbirds recorded a 67-45 victory in conference action Wednesday night at United Wireless Arena. “We didn't hit a lot of shots and we haven't been shooting the ball well lately except for the first half against Pratt,” said Dodge City head coach Lucas McDonald. “We have to do a better job of what we are doing when it comes to screening so we can get better looks at the goal. “Cloud also does a good job of taking advantage of other team's errors. They did that to us quite a bit in the first half. As we move forward, we have to make it a point to not give easy points to our opponents.” Jameeshia Armstrong led the Lady Conqs (7-12, 1-4) with 20 points (13 in the second half) and eight rebounds with Nicole Salazar and Kelli Tolar added seven apiece. Salazar also had four steals in the game for Dodge City. Pearlrae Thomas scored 15 points and grabbed seven rebounds to lead the league leading Lady T-Birds (14-4, 4-0) with Aleesha Couter coming off the bench to score 12 and Jordyn Alexander adding 11 in the game. The Lady T-Birds made 16 of their 29 shots before intermission and scored 12 points off of 11 Dodge City turnovers to build as much as a 25-point lead in the first half. Cloud County led 38-16 at halftime with the Lady Conqs making 7-of-29 from the field (24.1 percent). Couter scored 10 points to lead Cloud in scoring after 20 minutes of play, while Armstrong scored seven to lead Dodge City. The second half had the Lady Conqs try to stay with Cloud on both ends of the floor, but the Lady T-Birds were able to pull further ahead as the game continued. Cloud County pushed the lead up to 30 before Dodge City cut the lead down back to the halftime margin by the end of the game. The Lady Conqs' next game will be Saturday night against Seward County at The Green House. Tipoff is scheduled for 6 p.m.
