Jack Woods, 89, died Thursday, Jan. 17, 2013 at Presbyterian Manor of the Plains in Dodge City. He was born on January 1, 1924 in Sterling, Okla., the son of Dave and Myrtle Mae (Hayes) Woods. He grew up and attended schools in Sterling, Oklah., graduating high school there. He entered the U.S. Army during WWII, serving from 1942 to 1944 in the European Theatre. On his return home, he studied briefly at Southwestern State University in Weatherford, Okla. On November 8, 1947, he married Kathryn Troxel at Weatherford. They moved to Dodge City in 1948 where they remained. He was employed for forty years for the Atchison-Topeka, & Santa Fe railroad, where he worked as a car man. He retired in 1986. He was a member of the Church of Christ, Dodge City. Survivors include his wife, Kathryn, Dodge City; two daughters, Rita Nuss and husband Roland, Hutchinson, and Linda Blackburn and husband Brad, Ardmore, Okla.; two sons, Leroy Woods and wife Glenda, Dodge City, and Curtis Woods and wife Barb, Lawrence; one sister, Joyce McDonald, Elk City, Okla.; nine grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews, and friends. Funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 22, 2013 at Swaim Funeral Home, Dodge City with Mr. Gary L. Bennett and Mr. Anthony Lyons presiding. Burial will follow at Greencrest Cemetery in Dodge City with military rites provided by Howard Gotschall Post 1714, V.F.W. Visitation will be from noon to 8 p.m. Monday, Jan. 21, 2013 at Swaim Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials to the Presbyterian Manor of the Plains in care of the funeral home.
