  • The Shawnee Mission South Raiders got off the bus after a 5 1/2-hour ride from the Kansas City area and felt a little tired at the start of their game against the Wichita South Titans in the Tournament of Champions. The Raiders woke up midway through the opening quarter and scored 10 points in the final two minutes of the stanza to plow ahead towards a 68-30 victory over the Titans in a first round contest. "We were sloppy in the first quarter and it was horrible," said Raiders' head coach Brett McFall. "We talked about being mentally tough when we stepped into this arena. We didn't get off to the start we wanted to; but then we got a few steals and turnovers and got going in the game." The Raiders, the top team in Class 5A, turned a 3-2 lead to 13-2 by the end of the opening stanza. Shawnee scored 37 points off of 27 Ttian turnovers in the contest to turn the game into a blowout. Jordan Moore, the Titans' top scorer and rebounder, only scored two points and grabbed 10 rebounds in the loss for Wichita. DeAngelo Bruster came off the bench to lead the Raiders (10-0) in scoring with 16 points and five steals. All 12 Shawnee players scored and teamed up for 16 steals in the victory. "We just work hard in practice and work hard every day," Bruster said. "We just know what to expect from each other. We had a slow start because of the car ride, but then we got things going once we got the lead." The Raiders shot 29-of-57 from the field for the contest, while Wichita was 9-of-39 (23.1 percent). Shawnee led by as many as 41 points late in the game, with the Raiders scoring 24 of its points after intermission off of the Titans' turnovers. Kyle Bowers scored eight to lead the Titans (1-9) in that category. No other player hit more than one field goal in the loss.
