  • Cimarron, Meade to battle for HPL girls tourney title

  • The Cimarron Lady Bluejays and the Meade Lady Buffaloes will meet for the third time this season Saturday night, this time for the Hi-Plains League girls tournament championship at Garden City Community College. The Lady Bluejays are now 11-0 on the season after recording a 65-40 victory over Elkhart in one semifinal; while the Lady Buffaloes beat Southwestern Heights 44-32 in the other semifinal. Cimarron outscored the Lady Indians 22-9 in the opening period on the way to coasting towards the win. Ashtynn Burns scored eight points in the opening quarter and Morgan Ediger added six in the stanza. Ediger scored 15 of her 20 points before intermission, while Burns scored 11 of her 20 before the midway break. Kali Hoskinson scored 11 points to lead Elkhart (5-4), while Victoria Fullerton added 10 in the loss. Meade (7-4) took a completely different way to reach the final by not allowing a Lady Mustang point in the final quarter. The Lady Buffaloes led by three after the opening quarter but trailed 21-19 by intermission. Their deficit was cut in half by the end of the third quarter before outscoring Heights 13-0 in the final stanza to record the victory. Kinzie Friesen led Meade (7-3) with 18 points, while Tarah Wiens added 11 in the victory. Nayelly LaPoint scored 12 points to lead Southwestern Heights (8-4). Meade and Cimarron will play in the championship game at 6 p.m. Saturday. Cimarron has won the two previous meetings, both on their home court.
