  •     What a market we have!  Hitting all time highs one month and then
dropping like a rock the next!  If nothing else, the cattle market
puts some adrenaline in the system!  Of course, gas prices, public
opinion, and government ethics all act kind of the same too!
We are still in dire need of good moisture!  There are some areas
that have received it, but it sure seems to be extremely spotty and
fairly small amounts in agriculture areas.  Wheat fields around Enid,
OK go from maybe good to just dirt showing, and it doesn’t seem to be
    in just a small area.
The numbers of cattle out on wheat will probably make the number
crunchers go crazy!  Many folks are only running 10 to 20 percent of
normal, if they are running any at all, and a good portion of those
cattle are probably cows instead of stockers.  It will be very
interesting to see what and how many actually show up at auction the
    first week of March!
The futures board continues to be somewhat of a see saw.  Of
course, even with the prices on the board, it is hard to believe what
some of the stockers and feeders are bringing around the country.
$1000.00 for a grass steer before he gets on the truck sure seems like
a great deal of money!  But then there are some big yearlings bringing
    over $1300.00!
Fat cattle are a strange commodity anymore.  The old rules of
reason, logic, supply and demand don’t seem to come into play.  They
might get higher as the board gets lower or vice-versa.  They might
jump $3.00 in a day when $0.50 would have done the trick and they darn
sure get fed a lot more than they used to!  Even with costs of gain at
    the highest ever!
It is the time of the year to start thinking about spring grazing
and grass, or that’s the way it has been the last few years.  We all
seem to be willing to bet on the come, so let’s just hope and pray
that it comes this year!  There will soon be lots of calves bawling
around, there might be lots of cows coming available and there sure
will be lots of opportunities coming up!  Take advantage of the ones
    Page 2 of 2 - you can!
Get in the action! Go to the auction! Buy some cows or calves! Grow some beef!
It takes a cow to produce a calf which will produce the feeder and fat!
Pray for moisture!  Do a dance!
