  • The Dodge City Red Demons got caught in playing at the tempo of the Shawnee Mission South Raiders and never could catch up in a 66-31 loss in a semifinal contest of the 70th Tournament of Champions at United Wireless Arena. The Red Demons were only 11-of-27 from the field and committed 20 turnovers in their setback. Seventeen of the turnovers were Raider steals that were turned into 28 South points. Shaphan Gross was 4-of-5 from the field for nine points and four rebounds, while Jace Larson added seven and Matt Goedeken six in the loss. “Their defense was as intense as anything we've seen this year,” said DCHS head coach Dennis Hamilton. “We had a hard time into getting into any kind of offensive flow and I'll give all the credit to South's defense. I thought we competed better in the fourth quarter. I saw some kids hold their ground.” DeAngelo Bruster and Dainan Swoope scored 14 points apiece to lead the Raiders (11-0) and Josh Pedersen added 10 in the victory. Swoope also had eight rebounds for South . The Red Demons (5-4) scored only four field goals – one in the second quarter – and committed 10 turnovers in the first half; while South was 13-of-30 and didn't turn the ball over once on the way to a 34-11 margin at intermission. The Raiders recorded eight steals and scored 16 points off of Dodge City turnovers. Dodge City continued to have problems with the Raiders' defense in the third quarter, getting only five shots off while committing eight turnovers in the stanza. South led by as many as 32 points and had a 50-20 margin going into the final quarter. Gross had four of Dodge City's six field goals up to that point. The Raiders scored the first five points of the final quarter to lead 55-20 with the final score being the largest margin of the game. The Red Demons will face Scott City in the tournament's third place game at 5 p.m., with South playing Wichita North at 7 p.m. for the championship trophy. “They are going to be angry because they were so close to being where they wanted to be,” Hamilton said. “We're going to end up meeting each other, but we went a completely different route.” SHAWNEE MISSION SOUTH (66) – Ethan Kaplan 1-3 4-4 6, Ra'Keim Abdul 2-3 1-3 5, DeAngelo Bruster 5-11 3-3 14, Dainan Swoope 5-9 1-1 14, Jake Caldwell 2-6 0-0 4, Hunder Ahrens 0-0 0-0 0, Max Pozek 0-1 0-0 0, Devin Newsome 2-6 3-4 7, Josh Pedersen 4-10 2-2 10, Connor Hill 0-0 0-0 0, Brian Harness 1-1 0-0 2, Nick Oliver 2-2 0-0 4.
