  • Cimarron girls, Meade boys repeat as HPL champs

  • The Cimarron Lady Bluejays and Meade Buffaloes basketball squads completed their runs through the Hi-Plains League tournaments unscathed and repeated as league tournament champions Saturday night at Garden City Community College. The Lady Bluejays beat Meade 75-61 in the girls championship; while the Buffaloes beat Sublette 75-57 in the boys championship. Both of the winning teams remain unbeaten on the season. Cimarron outscored the Lady Buffaloes 25-9 after Meade, who was going for a sweep of the tournament titles, cut their deficit to one after three periods of play. Eva Koopman scored eight in the final stanza, while Ellen Waters and Ashtynn Burns added seven apiece to seal the victory for Cimarron (12-0). Meade led by three after the opening quarter, but trailed at halftime 41-35. The Lady Buffaloes (7-4) would not go quietly into the night in the second half by scoring 17 to trail 53-52. Tarah Wiens had five points in the third quarter, while Hannah Miller and Kinzie Friesen addd four. Burns led Cimarron in scoring with 23 points (including three 3-pointers), whie Koopman added 17 (12 in the second half) and Waters 15. Bailey Olvera scored 13 of her team-high 19 points in the first quarter for Meade, while Kinzie Friesen added 14 in the loss. Boys championship Meade 75, Sublette 57 The Buffaloes led by only two after the opening quarter, but pulled away from the Larks in each of the remaining three quarters to seal the victory and improve their unblemished winning season to 11 games. Meade scored 20 points in the second and third quarters to improve their margin to 58-41 with one stanza remaining as they also repeated as league tournament champions. Morgan Davis led the Buffaloes with 20 points (12 in the second half), while Jett Little added 19 and Trevin Wiens 11 in the victory. Nathan Cearly was the only Sublette player to score in double figures in the title game with 13. The Larks are now 8-4 on the season. Boys Third Place Stanton County 66, Cimarron 54 Marques Logan scored 19 of his game-high 25 points in the first half to help the Trojans build a seven-point halftime lead; and Quinn Kendrick scored 10 points in the final period to seal third place for Stanton County in the victory over the Bluejays. The two teams were tied 12-12 after the opening stanza before Stanton County scored 21 in the second quarter to push ahead 33-26. Logan had 11 in the quarter to jump start the Trojans. Four players scored in double figures for the Trojans (11-2): Logan, Kendrick (12), Jacob Cron (11) and Colby Overturf (10). Christian Fischer tried to help bring Cimarron (7-5) back in the game, scoring 11 of his team-high 24 points in the third quarter.
