  • Mary Marcella Shepherd, 95, died peacefully at the peak of a beautiful sunset on January 20, 2013 at Trinity Nursing and Rehab Center in Merriam, Kan. She was preceded in death by her husband Glen Lewis Shepherd on February 4, 1992 and her son Dennis Shepherd on October 5, 2010. She is survived by her son Roger (Niki) Shepherd of Merriam, Kan.; former daughter-in-law Carol Shepherd of Hays, Kan.; grandsons, Todd (Tina) Shepherd of Hutchinson, Kan., Michael (Janet) Shepherd of Miami, Flor.; and great grandchildren, Tylor and Treyton Shepherd of Hutchinson.  Mary was born October 1, 1917 at Copeland, Kansas to Clarence Madison Johnson and Nellie Bessie Johnson (Goff) who raised wheat and cattle on a farm near Copeland. In spite of the difficulties of the Great Depression and dust bowl years in western Kansas, she worked her way through college earning a teacher’s certificate from Emporia State Teachers College and taught in a rural school in Copeland.  She and Glen, her high school sweetheart, were married April 30, 1939. After living in Hutchinson and Great Bend where Glen worked for C.O. Mammel Grocery Store, they moved to Russell, Kansas in 1943 where they owned and operated a Firestone Retail Tire and Appliance Store. While in Russell, she was active in the Methodist church, serving on the church board, Lake Ministry and held several offices of the Salina District, United Methodist Women.  Mary and Glen relocated to Bella Vista, Ark. in 1971 where they were charter members of that Methodist church. While in Arkansas, she held offices in the Women’s Club, trained in Hospice work and served in the Stephen Ministry. In 1995 she moved to Overland Park, Kansas. Through the years, wherever she made her home, her church was an important part of her life. She was awarded three Life Membership pins and five Circle Awards. Mary, with her care for others, quick smile and laughter will be deeply missed. She was a gentle woman who was loved by all who knew her.  There will be no funeral service. Cremation with private interment at a later date. Cremation Society of Kansas & Missouri is in charge of arrangements.
