  • The South Gray Rebels had a little bit of a scare in the fourth quarter, but were able to maintain their poise in the final minutes to beat Hodgeman County 63-55 in a boys quarterfinal contest of the Southern Plains-Iroquois Activities Association tournament at United Wireless Arena.
The Rebels led by 20 going into the final quarter, but the Longhorns used a 12-point run to cut the margin to 58-50 with 3:50 remaining in regulation. Hodgeman County was able to get as close as six points with less than two minutes left before South Gray hit their free throws to seal the victory and advance in the tournament.
"We played pretty good in the first half, but we kind of got sluggish in the second half, especially in the fourth quarter when they came back," said South Gray senior Trenton Holloway. "We weren't nervous, but we needed to get down the court and get back in the game. We're just trying to go at this one game at a time, because we could get knocked off if we're not playing our best."
Holloway led the Rebels (10-1) with 22 points (11 in first half and 10 in third quarter), while Gaige Foskuhl added 10 (eight after intermission) and Carson Skidmore nine in the victory. Austin Pfannenstiel led Hodgeman County in scoring with 13 points. Jared Borger added 12 (seven in the fourth quarter) with Brennan Harms and William Fierro scoring 10 apiece (Harms scored all of his in fourth quarter).
South Gray scored nine of the first 13 points of the game on the way to a 16-8 lead by the end of the first quarter. The Rebels increased the lead to 25-13 midway through the second stanza before a seven-point run cut the Longhorns' deficit to five. South Gray led 28-20 at intermission.
The third quarter saw the Rebels' offense get going for 25 points and a 21-point lead before Hodgeman County made their fourth quarter run, finishing with 24 points in the final stanza.
The Rebels will face Ashland in a boys semifinal game at 6 p.m. Friday night at the UWA; while Hodgeman County will play South Central in a consolation game at 3 p.m. Friday.
