The Kiowa County Mavericks didn't have the best of starts against the South Central Timberwolves in Tuesday afternoon action in the first boys quarterfinal game of the Southern Plains-Iroquois Activities Association tournament.

The Mavericks were awakened by their coaches and dominated the rest of the contest to record a 46-33 victory over the Timberwolves at United Wireless Arena.

Damien Odle scored nine points to lead the Mavericks' offense and the Kiowa County defense didn't allow a basket in the second quarter to build a 22-10 lead at halftime.

"We have always been a slow team coming out to play and that happened again today," Odle said. "It takes a little while to get going, but we really got strong once the second quarter got started.

"We also came out on the shoot-around and we had a little trouble getting going. We started to shoot better once we got used to how things looked. We do take pride on our defense, because our defense is how we get our offense going."

South Central led 8-7 after the opening quarter before Kiowa County got their run in the second quarter with 15 points for the halftime lead. The Mavericks led by as many as 14 points early in the second half before the Timberwolves made their run after intermission.

The Timberwolves cut the margin to 11 by the end of the stanza, then scored the first five points of the final quarter to trail 33-27. Kiowa County answered with a seven-point run to seal the victory.

Odle scored 12 points in the second half and finished the game with 23 points; while Rustin Ardery added 14 for the Mavericks (8-4).

Koy Alexander scored 15 points and James Cook added 11 to lead South Central (5-6) in scoring. The Timberwolves made only 10 field goals (five from 3-point range) in the loss.
