  • The Ashland Lady Bluejays decided the best way to handle the Fowler Lady Goldbugs defense was to shoot over them; at least it would seem that way considering how they were able to shoot from beyond the 3-point arc.
The Lady Bluejays made eight three-pointers as a team on the way to a 57-38 victory over Fowler in a Southern Plains-Iroquois Activities Association girls quarterfinal contest at United Wireless Arena.
Canaan Endicott scored 16 of her game-high 20 points in the first half (including four from 3-point range). Elizabeth McKinney added 15 points (nine in the third period) and Nichole Borgelt 10 in the victory.
Nikki Friesen led Fowler (5-7) with 14 points and Hannah Heinz added nine for the Lady Goldbugs.
Ashland used an eight-point run to help build a 16-11 lead and Endicott hit three of her shots from long distance in the second stanza as the Lady Bluejays extended the margin to 32-21 by intermission.
The third quarter saw McKinney and Kara Reimer take over the scoring load for the Bluejays (9-2). McKinney scored nine and Reimer added six, while the Ashland defense allowed only three field goals. Ashland outscored Fowler 20-8 in the stanza.
Ashland will play Bucklin in a girls semifinal game Thursday night at UWA. Tip-off is scheduled for 6 p.m. Fowler will battle South Gray in a girls consolation game at 4:30 p.m. Thursday.
