  • Maverick boys, Lancer girls claim third place battles

  • The Spearville Lady Lancers shut down the Ashland offense in the third quarter and withstood a fourth-quarter rally by the Lady Bluejays to win 42-37 in the girls third place game of the Southern Plains-Iroquois Activities Association tournament at United Wireless Arena.
    Ashland led 20-17 at halftime but scored only two points in the third quarter as the Lady Lancers (10-3) clamped down on the Lady Bluejays offense. A fourth quarter rally by the Ashland girls got the deficit down to three late in the game, but Spearville was able to hit enough of their free throws to seal the victory.
    Taylor Offerle scored 14 points (including three 3-pointers) to lead the Lady Lancers in scoring. Eight Spearville players scored in the win.
    Canaan Endicott scored 19 points to lead the Lady Bluejays (9-4).

    The Mavericks scored the first nine points of the game and led by seven after the opening quarter and never trailed the Bluejays in the SPIAA boys third place game.
    Ashland got going in the second quarter and cut the margin to 21-18 by intermission. Kiowa County was able to extend the lead to eight by the end of the third quarter and led by as many as 13 points in the final stanza before the Bluejays made a late run.
    Caleb Davis scored 19 points to lead the Mavericks (9-5) and Damien Odle added 15. Grant Meininger scored 17 points to lead Ashland (7-7) and Kole Konrade added 14 in the loss.
