The Dodge City Red Demons used its defensive pressure to shut down the Hays Indians in a 51-37 Western Athletic Conference road victory.
The Red Demons (6-5, 2-2) had lost four of its last five games and given up 60 or more points in its last two contests, but pushed up their pressure against the Indians. Hays made only 11-of-38 shots and committed 22 turnovers. Dodge City scored 24 points off of turnovers for the game.
Dodge City took total control of the game in the second half. The Demons were 13-of-23 from the field, while giving up only five Hays field goals after intermission. Shaphan Gross scored 14 of his 18 points in the second half and had a double-double in the game with 11 rebounds as well. Matt Goedeken also scored in double figures for Dodge City with 10.
Brady Werth scored 14 points to lead Hays in scoring, while Derek Bixenman added 10 in the loss.
The two teams traded the lead early before the Red Demons pushed ahead by six midway through the opening stanza. Dodge City led Hays 12-10 after the opening quarter with the Demons scoring eight points off of turnovers and four more off of second chances.
The teams continued to stay close in the second quarter with two more lead changes and two more ties in the second quarter. Dodge City remained ahead 21-19 at intermission. The Demons scored 10 points off of 12 Indian turnovers.
Goedeken led Dodge City with six points, with Kade Parker also scoring six to lead Hays in scoring.
Gross dominated play for the Red Demons in the third quarter, scoring eight points and grabbing four rebounds as Dodge City extended their lead to 33-25. The Demons forced nine turnovers in the stanza and scored another six points off those miscues. Hays went only 2-of-10 shooting during the eight minute stretch.
The Red Demons completed the rout by scoring 18 points in the final stanza.
Dodge City's next game is Tuesday night against Liberal. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:45 p.m.
