The last time Hays and Dodge City clashed on Jan. 15, Hays escaped with a 44-42 win. Thursday's consolation semifinal was more of the same, with the Indians once again surviving a late push from the Lady Demons to win 58-52.
Hays used a 9-0 run to take a 21-13 lead after the first quarter, but Dodge City fired back in the second, ripping off a 12-3 push that gave them a 30-29 advantage at the intermission.
Chandra Sain led the attack in a season-high performance, scoring 15 first half points, while the Demons shot 9-of-20 from the field, including 5-of-9 from behind the three-point line.
Third quarter saw Hays take a bit of a lead, but Dodge City came back in the fourth, closing the gap to a single possession, before Hays was able to make a series of foul shots to close out the win.
Hays shot 22-of-44 for the game, only one of which was a three point bucket, and 13-of-24 from the foul line in the win. Dodge City was 18-of-50 in field goal shooting.
Sain had a season-high 25 points againt the Indians. Teammate Katrina Roenfeldt added 14 for the Lady Demons.
Katelyn Schumacher had 21 to lead a trio of Indians in double figures. Janae Gagnon had 11 and Taylor Herman added 10 in the win.
Hays (6-6) will play Valley Center at 3:43 p.m. this afternoon in the fifth place game. Dodge City (2-8) will face Wichita Southeast in the seventh place game at 2 p.m.
