  • Goldbugs gnaw Rebels for SPIAA boys league title

  • The Fowler Goldbugs went on the offensive Saturday night as they dominated both ends of the floor in a 66-43 victory over the South Gray Rebels to win the Southern Plains-Iroquois Activities Association boys championship at United Wireless Arena.
    Fowler, unbeaten at 12-0 and the top seed, hit eight 3-point shots by Joel Milford (3), Taylin Bird (3) and Tem Shetley (2). The Goldbugs also were able to show their dominance on the boards for second chances on their end of the court as post Jett Reese scored 24 points. Bird added 13, Shetley 12 and Milford 11 in the win.
    The Goldbugs scored the first 11 points of the game and limited South Gray to two field goals in the opening quarter. Fowler continued its domination in the second quarter, hitting eight of their 12 shots in the stanza to increase the led to 39-19 at halftime. The Goldbugs finished the half shooting 14-of-25 from the field.
    Fowler led by as much as 26 points in the second half to keep the Rebels (11-2) from getting any kind of rally going after intermission.
    Jake Peters came off the bench to lead South Gray in scoring with 14 points and Trenton Holloway added 13 in the loss.
