For several months now, a new housing development has been underway in Spearville. The development will add 12 new single family homes to the area, with an option to add an additional six to nine homes at a later date.
Construction is now completed on the streets, as well as curbing and guttering. Electric, water and sewer access has also been installed.
Nine of the homes are still available for purchase. Each lot costs $15,000, plus the cost of building. Once a lot is purchased, the owner then has the option of using a builder suggested by Spearville Development LLC, the developer of the project, or choosing their own.
Two houses are currently being built in the area, one of which is a spec home. It will be ready to be sold shortly.
Bill Hornung, of B&S Drywall and Construction, said they have just finished the basement on the house and are getting ready to start building.
"It's a three-bedroom, two-bath home with a two-car garage," Hornung said. "It's in the 1,600 square foot range."
Hornung also said that while he does have a general plan and decorating scheme for the house, he will leave some decisions up to the future homeowners.
"I'll have an allowance for the flooring and the countertops and other finishing touches," he said.
Spearville Development LLC Manager Steve Knoeber is optimistic that interest in the lots will increase now the streets have been completed.
"I'm hopeful that not only will the rest of the lots be sold, but also that construction on the lots will also start soon," Knoeber said.
Knoeber also said that, although Spearville Development LLC would be happy to do the housing construction, they are letting the owners use whichever builder they choose.
"We wanted to give people the ability to build the house they want, not be stuck with a model house that looks exactly like those around it," Knoeber said in an interview in 2012.
Knoeber also noted that Spearville is a great place for young families to settle down, because construction on a new school will begin in just a few weeks. It will be paid for completely with money from wind farms in the area.
"And at just $15,000 per lot, with all the extras included, sewer, electric, water and everything else, it's a really good deal for someone who's looking to build," Knoeber said.
