The Dodge City Lady Demons took advantage of their athleticism and defense to beat the Liberal Lady Redskins 48-28 in Western Athletic Conference action at the DCHS Fieldhouse.

It hadn't been a lack of effort, but a lack of execution for 32 minutes that had befuddled the Lady Demons during their eight-game losing streak. That execution in the win was probably most evident in points off turnovers. The Lady Demons (3-9, 1-3) took advantage of 15 Liberal turnovers for 19 Dodge City points for the victory; while the Lady Redskins scored only four points off of 13 Dodge City miscues.

"We played together and shared the basketball. We had 14 assists and played great team basketball," said DCHS girls basketball head coach Kelley Snodgrass. "An emphasis has been to get back and play defense. I don't care if you turn the ball over if you get back on defense and make something happen on the other end. We capitalized on some of their turnovers and were aggressive on the other end."

Senior post player Ciera Lampe led Dodge City with 17 points and five rebounds, while Jessica Harshberger came off the bench and five of her six shots to score 10 points and grab six boards in the Lady Demons' victory (the first in the league this season).

"I think we needed to just come out strong and we stayed ahead of them," said Lady Demon post player Ciera Lampe. "We pushed it up the floor and we worked hard to get the win. We knew we just had to stay confident because we knew what we were capable of doing. We just needed to come out and show everyone that we could do it."

Jai Chapman scored eight points and grabbed seven rebounds to lead Liberal (4-10, 0-4).

The Lady Demons scored the first five points of the game on the way to an 8-4 lead after the opening stanza. Six of Dodge City's points came off of Liberal turnovers.

Dodge City used an 11-point run in the second quarter to build its largest lead of the half at 15 points and led 23-10 at halftime. Lampe had 10 points and grabbed three boards in the first half to lead the Lady Demons, while no player for Liberal had more than three before intermission.

Both teams had seven turnovers in the first half, but the Lady Demons were able to take better advantage, outscoring Liberal 10-2 on points off turnovers.

Dodge City scored the first five points of the third quarter, extending the lead to 20 midway through the stanza. Liberal never got the margin closer than 17 the rest of the way before the Lady Demons pushed the lead up to 25 before putting in their substitute players.

The Lady Demons' next action is Friday with a return to McPherson for a game against the Lady Pups. Tip-off is scheduled for 6:15 p.m.
