  • A Ford County jury deliberated into the late evening hours Wednesday before reaching a verdict in the case of 23-year-old Steven Longdon. He faced six charges, all stemming from a July 29 incident when he was stopped at a DUI checkpoint in Dodge City. Longdon was found guilty of felony interference with a law enforcement officer, a severity level 9 felony. According to Longdon's defense attorney, Daniel Arkell, he was also found guilty of a DUI and not having a valid driver's license. "It will be determined later if this was a first or second DUI," Arkell said. Longdon was found not guilty of attempted aggravated battery of a law enforcement officer with a motor vehicle and also on a charge of no insurance. The jury deadlocked on the charge of misdemeanor battery against the law enforcement officer. Assistant County Attorney Kevin Salzman has refiled the charge of misdemeanor battery against the law enforcement officer and set a new trial date, according to a representative from the Ford County Attorney's office. Court records report that Officer Lee Kolbeck of the Dodge City Police Department was standing on the running boards of Longdon's truck during the stop when Longdon allegedly "pushed the gas pedal to the floor accelerating very rapidly." The report states that Longdon is accused of swinging at Kolbeck and attempting to push him off the vehicle. Kolbeck was unharmed in the incident. Longdon first appeared in court July 30 and was released on $40,000 bond. He violated his bond Aug. 24 and was arrested. He was bound over for arraignment and trial during a contested preliminary hearing Nov. 26 and subsequently plead not guilty to all of the charges. Longdon's sentencing will be scheduled at a later date. Follow Abigail on Twitter, @Abigail_dcglobe.
