  • Red Demons shocked by Bullpups' fourth quarter eruption

  • The Dodge City Red Demons had a horrid second half against the McPherson Bullpups, suffering a 53-42 loss after leading for most of the game at the MHS Roundhouse.
    McPherson made six of its seven shots in the final quarter and outscored Dodge City 22-9 to pull away with the victory as the hot hands held by the Red Demons in the first half cooled off at intermission.
    Dodge City (7-6) was only 6-of-20 from the field and committed eight turnovers after intermission. The Red Demons were outrebounded 30-23 and scored only two points on second chance opportunities.
    Shaphan Gross led the Demons in scoring with 13 points, while Austin Weiser added 10 in the win, but nine points for both of those players came in the opening stanza. Only three other players scored for Dodge City in the loss.
    Ryan Horton scored 13 points to lead McPherson (14-2), while Keaton Sorenson and Kyler Kinnamon recorded double-doubles for the Bullpups: Sorenson had 12 points and 11 rebounds, while Kinnamon had 11 points and 10 assists.
    Gross and Weiser were all the scoring pop the Demons needed in the first quarterto help Dodge City build an 18-14 lead after the stanza. Gross hit all three of his shots in the period, while Weiser hit all 3 of his three-point attempts.
    The second quarter saw both teams establish more defensive pressure, but the Demons still shooting well enough to increase their lead to 27-22 at intermission. McPherson outscored Dodge City 6-0 in the first half on points off turnovers, but the Demons were 5-of-8 from 3-point range to build the lead.
    Dodge City was able to maintain their lead in the third quarter, despite only shooting 3-of-10 from the field. All six points for the Demons were off of McPherson turnovers for a 33-31 advantage going into the final stanza.
    The Red Demons return home for action against the Ulysses Tigers at the DCHS Fieldhouse. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
