The Dodge City Lady Demons found out the hard way Friday night why the McPherson Lady Bullpups are ranked third in Class 4A.
The Lady Bullpups dominated the first half of action and didn't slow down much in the second half on the way to a 67-39 victory over the Lady Demons at The MHS Roundhouse.
How dominant was the first half for the host Lady Bullpups?
McPherson was 17-of-28 from the field (60.7 percent) after 16 minutes of play with an even better percentage from 3-point range (7-of-11, 63.6 percent). The Lady Bullpups committed only three turnovers while forcing the Lady Demons into 12 turnovers that were turned into 23 McPherson points.
The Lady Demons (3-10) were outscored 15-3 within four minutes of play and gave up seven points at the close of the stanza to trail 24-7 after the first quarter. McPherson was 10-of-13 from the field in the period.
The Lady Bullpups (12-3) continued to dominate the game in the second half by taking advantage of Dodge City turnovers. McPherson led by as many as 31 points and held a 46-21 margin at halftime.
McPherson was able to extend its lead back to 30 points by the end of the third quarter. The lead got as big as 61-28 early in the fourth quarter before the Lady Demons were able to cut the deficit.
Katrina Roenfeldt scored 13 points and grabbed five rebounds to lead Dodge City. Alexis Sanchez was the only other Lady Demon player to scorn double figures with 11. Dodge City shot 14-of-42 and committed 22 turnovers in the loss.
Abby Pedersen scored 21 points (including 5-of-7 from 3-point range) to lead McPherson. Katelyn Loecker added 17 and Janae Barnes 12 with both players grabbing six boards in the win. McPherson finished 10-of-17 from 3-point range and outscored the Lady Demons 33-4 in points off turnovers.
The Lady Demons' next game is at home Tuesday night against Ulysses. Tipoff is set for 6 p.m.
