The Kansas Bureau of Investigation (KBI) and Kansas law enforcement is asking Kansans for assistance in locating Robert Helms. According to a release from the KBI, Helms is suspected of passing himself off as a law enforcement officer throughout the state of Kansas while cashing phony payroll checks and issuing bad checks to purchase items. Helms has been known to use a false badge. Helms is 45-years-old, 5'7" tall and 190 pounds. He has blue eyes and short gray hair. Helms is known to wear round glasses and looks older than his age. He has recently been seen driving a maroon Chrysler or Dodge minivan. He has also been spotted in Ulysses, Meade, Pratt, Kingman, Hugoton and as many as 15 other cities across the state. Information from the KBI indicates Helms has been in western Kansas as recently as Feb. 1 when he was reported to have been in Scott City and Russell. Helms has also targeted Alco and similar stores in smaller communities. Dodge City Police Chief Craig Mellecker said the department has a photo of the impostor posted at the police station. He said Helms' alleged crime streak has been going on for quite some time and described the suspect as "fairly mobile." 'He's a person that could really be anywhere at this point," Mellecker said. "He started in southeast Kansas and has moved out west." Mellecker gave the following suggestion for anyone who thinks they may encounter someone posing as a law enforcement officer. "Drive to a gas station or the police department and call 9-1-1. The dispatcher will be able to tell you if there is an officer pulling you over or not." Mellecker said anyone who thinks an impostor may be at their home or business should ask to see the officer's department ID. "All officers are required to carry their ID at all times. If the person doesn't have one, do not let them in the residence or business and call 9-1-1." The KBI release also stated that Helms is presumed innocent until proven guilty. Anyone with knowledge of Helms' whereabouts is asked to call the DCPD at (620) 225-8128 or 1-800-KS-Crime. Follow Abigail on Twitter @Abigail_dcglobe.
