  • The growth of a basketball player isn't always shown all of a sudden, but in the time they are called to execute for the team.
That was the case of Dodge City sophomore guard Breckyne Pike in the Lady Demons' 45-30 victory over the Ulysses Lady Tigers. It wasn't that she scored a career high 11 points and seven rebounds, but when she scored. Every time the Lady Tigers looked to make a run, Pike just happened to be the person at the right place at the right time.
Pike scored the final four points in the first half to help the Lady Demons build the lead back to double digits before halftime; banked in a three-point basket in the third quarter to make the score 30-19 late in the third; and hit four free throws after grabbing two defensive rebounds in the fourth quarter to help seal the victory.
"I think the coaches are really challenging me," Pike said after the game. "I really try to push myself and try to give the coaches everything I have on the court when they give me the chance. I'm really grateful the coaches put me out there so I can show them the abilities I have."
Lady Demons head coach Kelley Snodgrass said Pike has grown in the two areas she stresses during practice: rebounding and defense.
"She crashes the board hard and gets second chance opportunities," Snodgrass said. "On defense, she's quick and is able to get turnovers for us as well."
Ciera Lampe also scored 11 points and grabbed eight boards in the victory for the Lady Demons (4-10) and Katrina Roenfeldt added nine. Dodge City outrebounded Ulysses 40-30 and scored 17 points off of Lady Tigers' turnovers.
"They did a good job of attacking," Snodgrass said. "When we force turnovers; we have been more aggressive on transition and hitting the open person. We want to continue to progress, peak at the right time and make some noise in the postseason."
Page 2 of 3 - Carolina Gallegos scored 11 points and grabbed seven rebounds to lead Ulysses (4-13). Amanda Langley added six points and grabbed 11 boards in the loss for the Lady Tigers.
The Lady Demons scored the first four points of the game and made six of 10 shots in building a 14-5 lead after the opening quarter. Dodge City also scored eight points off of seven Ulysses turnovers due to the Lady Demons' full court press.
Dodge City continued their defensive pressure in the second quarter, giving up only one field goal in the period. Ulysses was able to stay close by hitting their free throws, but the Lady Demons' Breckyne Pike scored the final four points of the stanza to help give the home team a 23-12 lead at halftime.
Ulysses was only 3-of-16 shooting and committed 15 turnovers in the first half. Dodge City turned those turnovers into 14 points to help build their lead. The Lady Tigers weren't as successful taking advantage of the 14 Dodge City turnovers, scoring only five points.
The Lady Tigers came out more aggressive in the third quarter, forcing six turnovers and limiting the Dodge City shooting to 4-of-12. Ulysses were 6-of-16 shooting to cut its deficit to 33-25 by the end of the stanza.
Dodge City slowed the game down in the fourth quarter with neither team scored during the first 4 ½ minutes of the stanza. The Lady Demons then made their free throws as the Ulysses squad tried to make a final rally to get back in the game.
The Lady Demons will play again Thursday night at DCHS Fieldhouse against Colby. Tip-off for the game is scheduled for 6 p.m.
