Cool touches in both halves freeze Conqs
The Dodge City Conquistadors never could get its offense going for most of their Jayhawk West contest against the Barton County Cougars in a 73-53 setback Wednesday night at United Wireless Arena.
The Conqs spent more than 10 minutes of each half not being able to make their shots on the way to losing their 16th straight game to the Cougars. Dodge City finished 14-of-54 (25.9 percent) for the game and was outrebounded by Barton 47-35.
Delvon Rencher scored 12 points and five rebounds to lead Dodge City (12-12, 4-6), and Aaron Tate added 10 points and also grabbed five rebounds for the Conqs. Algie Lee scored 30 points — 17 in the second half — and five rebounds to lead Barton (20-4, 7-3), while Turon Parker had 13 points and Shaka Thomas added 11.
The Conqs hit only one field goal in the first 11 minutes of the game as the Cougars built a 16-7 lead. Dodge City went 7-of-31 from the field in the first half, but trailed only 32-29 at halftime because of 12-of-14 free throw shooting. Tate scored nine points and grabbed four rebounds for the host squad, while Key already had 13 points to lead Barton.
Dodge City scored eight of the first 10 points of the second half to grab a four-point lead and the two teams were tied at 40-apiece with 14 minutes to go. The Conqs then went without a field goal for more than 10 minutes as the Cougars went on a 29-4 run to turn the close game into a rout. The Conqs' shooting drought ended on a three-point basket by Conner Carman.
The Conqs' next game is scheduled Saturday night against the Colby Trojans. Tip-off is scheduled for 8 p.m. at Colby Community Center.
