  • Earlier this week we asked our Facebook fans to answer the following question; "Recently, the U.S. Defense Secretary Leon Panetta cleared the way for women to serve in many combat positions in the armed forces. Do you agree with his decision to allow women to serve in combat? Why or way not?" And told them their response may be edited for content and clarity and used in an upcoming article in the Globe. Here are the responses we've received.
Kieryn A. Boyd: "I think he did a good thing because now women and men are treated equal. If they want to then they should have the right to."
David Bender: "I do not think anyone should serve in the military. But, if there must be one, there should be complete equality. The best person for the job gets the job without considering race or gender."
Dawn Thompson Kazar: "I think if women want to serve in a combat position, they should be allowed to. As long as they meet the same physical conditions as men."
Jennifer Lapp: "As a woman, I have mixed feelings. I think combat is traumatic no matter your gender. However, the face of war has changed so much I don't know that women could handle having to kill a child. The reality of today's wars is children are forced to fight against us."
We also polled our website visitors about what they thought about women being in combat. At press time, 26 people had answered. Forty-six percent said that yes, women should be given equal treatment with men. Forty-six percent also said that no, women cant handle being in combat. And eight percent said they weren't sure how they felt about women being in combat.
