The Dodge City Lady Demons continued to stay strong on the defensive side of the ball despite the pressure given by the Colby Lady Eagles in their contest Thursday night at the DCHS Fieldhouse.
But the Dodge City offense didn't run well against the Colby defensive pressure and that was the difference in a 35-30 setback to the Lady Eagles.
Dodge City was 9-of-31 from the field and committed 21 turnovers in the game.
"We got impatient offensively," said Dodge City head coach Kelley Snodgrass."We didn't run through our offense and we took our shots too quickly. We have to be more disciplined on the offensive end."
Snodgrass was pleased with the Dodge City defensive effort against a team with a history of scoring a bunch of points, but the fouls caught up with the Lady Demons in the final quarter. The Lady Eagles (9-of-30) didn't shoot much better than Dodge City, but stayed aggressive in getting to the free throw line as they forced the Lady Demons to foul.
"I was proud of us defensively against Colby," Snodgrass said. "But Colby got aggressive. They were much more aggressive on the inside."
Alexis Sanchez scored 12 points to lead the Lady Demons (4-11), while Jessie Harshberger added eight. Only four players scored for Dodge City in the loss.
Haileigh Shull scored 10 points to lead Colby (10-6), while Lauren Bell added eight.
Neither team handled its offense well in a first quarter that ended with the score tied at 5-5. The Lady Demons were 2-of-5 with seven turnovers after eight minutes of play, while Colby made only two of its eight shots with five turnovers in the opening stanza.
Colby hit their first three shots of the second quarter to build a seven-point lead, but didn't make any more field goals in the first half. Dodge City scored the final five points to trail 13-11 at halftime. No player scored more than three points in the first half.
The Lady Demons scored the first five points of the third quarter to build a three-point lead before Colby answered later by scoring the last five points of the period to regain their two-point lead going into the final stanza.
Colby continued to attack the Dodge City defense in the final quarter and used eight free throws to go along with their one basket to close out the game, leading 34-26 with two minutes left in the game.
The Lady Demons' next game will be Saturday afternoon when they travel to Wichita to face the Collegiate Spartans. Tipoff is scheduled for 4 p.m.
