At approximately 2:49 p.m. Wednesday Ford County Communications received a call from an unknown individual who threatened the presence of an explosive device at Santa Fe Trail Community Corrections, 208 W. Spruce St.
Chief of Police Craig Mellecker said the police department, in conjunction with the Ford County Sheriff's Office, blocked off the alley behind the building as well as Spruce Street directly in front of Community Corrections. Santa Fe Trail Community Corrections was evacuated at the discretion of the facilities director. Neighboring businesses were given the option to evacuate as well.
Law enforcement called in the Kansas Highway Patrol (KHP) bomb dog to do a search of the building. The search was conducted around 5:30 p.m.
According to Mellecker, the canine cleared the building and found nothing.
The scene was released just after 6:30 p.m.
When asked if he thought the threat was credible, Mellecker said the police department treats all threats as if they are real and works to determine a way to resolve the problem.
"You just never know," he said.
The DCPD has started an investigation to determine the identity of the caller. Mellecker said the department is following up on several leads.
