At approximately 2:49 p.m. today Ford County Communications received a call from an unknown individual who threatened the presence of an explosive device at 208 W. Spruce. The location is that of Santa Fe Trail Community Corrections. Chief of Police Craig Mellecker said the police department, in conjunction with the Ford County Sheriff's Office, have blocked off the alley behind the building as well as Spruce street directly in front of Community Corrections. Santa Fe Trail Community Corrections was evacuated at the discretion of the facilities director. Neighboring businesses were given the option to evacuate as well. "Right now we are waiting for the Kansas Highway Patrol bomb dog which is enroute from Wichita," Mellecker said. The canine should arrive around 6 p.m. and will do a search of the building upon arrival. When asked if he thought the threat was credible, Mellecker said the police department treats all threats as if they are real and works to determine a way to resolve the problem. "You just never know," he said. The DCPD has started an investigation to determine the caller who allegedly made the threat. Mellecker said the department is following up on several leads.
