  • The Dodge City Lady Demons didn't get stampeded by the visiting Garden City Lady Buffaloes like the first meeting, but they weren't able to keep Garden City from claiming at least a share of the Western Athletic Conference title in a 60-38 decision Tuesday night at the DCHS Fieldhouse.
The Lady Buffaoes used their size advantage to shoot better than 50 percent in both halves, finishing 22-of-40 from the field (55 percent) for the game.
Dodge City (5-12, 1-4) was able to slow down the Garden City offense at times, but the Lady Demons weren't able to take advantage of many of the chances. The Lady Demons did score 16 points off of turnovers, but made only five of their 11 free throws.
"We handled their press a lot better and we handled their pressure better until the fourth quarter when we got tired and made mental mistakes," said DCHS head coach Kelley Snodgrass. "We made a run in the third quarter and the girls played their hearts out. We just have to do a better job of keeping them from making transition baskets. They made too many of them in the game."
Alexis Sanchez led Dodge City with nine points, while Chandra Sain came off the bench to add seven more for the Lady Demons.
The teams were tied at 8-8 midway through the first half before Garden City clamped down and used an 11-point run to build a 19-10 lead after the opening period. Bernbeck hit all three of her shots and all three of her field goals to score nine points to lead the Lady Buffaloes attack.
Garden City (16-2, 6-0) continued its attack in the second quarter by scoring the first 13 points of the stanza, but the Lady Demons battled back and scored eight of the last 11 points to trail 35-18 at halftime.
The Lady Buffaloes shot 12-of-22 from the field in the first half using their speed to get set up for offense before the Lady Demons were prepared. Bernbeck with 14 points and five rebounds to lead Garden City.
Dodge City made seven of its 24 shots before intermission, but only 3-of-9 from the free throw line. Jessie Harshberger and Sanchez had four points apiece after 16 minutes of play for the Lady Demons.
