  • The Dodge City Lady Demons didn’t get off to a good start against the Hays Lady Indians in either half which ultimately turned out to be the difference in a 56-38 setback on “Senior Night” at the DCHS Fieldhouse.

The Lady Demons gave up the first 10 points of the game and the first 10 points of the second half as Hays was able to trip up the Dodge City offense with their defensive pressure and hot shooting. The Lady Indians were 12-of-23 in the first half and 10-of-15 after intermission to shoot the lights out of the Dodge City squad.

“We’ve talked about being aggressive at the start of the game and we just weren’t,” said DCHS head coach Kelley Snodgrass. “You can’t give a team like Hays that kind of momentum to start the game and we weren’t able to catch up with them.”

Alexis Sanchez scored 14 points (10 in the second half) on probably her final game at the Fieldhouse. Jessie Harshberger added seven points while Katrina Roenfeld and senior Ciera Lampe scored six points apiece in the loss.

Katelyn Schumacher scored 14 of her game-high 18 points in the first half and also grabbed eight rebounds in leading the Lady Indians (9-10, 4-3). Taylor Herman added 10 points with four rebounds and four assists for Hays in the win.

The Indians led 15-7 after their initial run, before the Lady Demons were able to cut the margin down to 17-12 early in the second period. Hays was able to get the margin back up to 27-19 at intermission. Lampe had scored all six of her points in the first half to lead the Lady Demons.

Hays pushed the lead up to 18 with their second half start with the Lady Demons never getting the lead closer than 13 points by the end of the third quarter. The Lady Indians sealed the victory by making five of their six shots in the final stanza.

The Lady Demons close out the regular season with a final WAC contest on the road at Liberal. Dodge City beat Liberal in the first meeting of the season. Tip-off is scheduled for 6 p.m.

The Lady Demons are still tied with Campus in the seedings race and one game behind Hutchinson. Both Hutchinson and Campus lost, which means the Lady Demons still have a chance to move up to the fifth spot or fall to the No. 7 seed.

“It’s nice to know that we still are playing for something,” Snodgrass said. “What we need to do is to play the kind of game we are capable of playing and get the win and some momentum for the sub-state.”
