The Dodge City Lady Demons were unable to overcome a 13-point start by the Maize Lady Eagles in a 45-24 loss in Saturday night's sub-state final.
But even in losing, the Lady Demons may have built the foundation for success in the upcoming season.
Starting off with the never-give-up attitude.
"You can't tell by the score how hard the girls play," said DCHS head coach Kellie Snodgrass. "They got them down, but they kept fighting and playing hard. We're making strides. I'm proud of the girls and how they improved. Maize is a great team where a lot of those girls go and compete at the collegiate level.
"I'm very proud of the girls. We did an awesome job coming back. We didn't take care of the ball early, but we were able to do a better job after that against their pressure."
Dodge City made only seven field goals in the game and were outrebounded 37-25. Although the Lady Demons committed 18 turnovers, 10 of the were in the firt quarter.
Nine of the Lady Eagles' first 13 points came of Dodge City turnovers after four minutes of play. Maize continued their pressure and pushed the lead to 17-7 by the end of the stanza. Breckyne Pike had six of the Lady Demons' points in the stanza.
Maize continued to dominate both ends of the floor, but weren't as successful scoring as the Lady Demons started to assert their defense. Dodge City, however, didn't score themselves until the final minute before intermission as Jessie Harshberger hit a basket and a free throw to cut the deficit to 24-10 at intermission.
Dodge City made only three of its 21 shots in the first half. The Lady Demons committed 13 turnovers that Maize was able to turn into 10 points.
The Lady Demons (6-16) had a couple of runs at the start of both the third and fourth periods, but the Lady Eagles were able to pull away in both stanzas.
Pike led Dodge City with eight points, while Harshberger added five in the loss. Keiryn Swenson scored 13 points to lead Maize (19-2), while Paige Lundwitz added 11 and nine from Brayden Bird.
