  • A 21-year-old man accused of child abuse appeared in court Thursday.
Juan Francisco Bartolome, 21, was taken into custody Wednesday, Feb. 13, on a child abuse charge. Court records show the alleged abuse occurred Jan. 30.
A contested preliminary hearing on the charge is set to be scheduled with court calendars.
Ford County Attorney Natalie Randall confirmed Wednesday that the victim of the alleged abuse charge in deceased, but said the death does not appear to be related to the abuse.
Randall said she could not identify the child in question based on office policy.
The Dodge City Police Department is currently investigating the death of a child who's age is consistent with that of the child identified in Bartolome's court file. The date of the alleged abuse occured one day before emergency services were dispatched to a residence on Johnson Avenue in Dodge City on a report of a 20-month-old child not breathing.
Chief of Police Craig Mellecker said in a press release that he would not comment until the investigation is completed.
Bartolome is being held on $150,000 bond.
