  • Forty years ago Barbara Lundin ran for the Dodge City school board, and lost. This year she's hoping history doesn't repeat itself.
"I had just moved to the area and wanted to give back to the community in some way," she said. "But, I came in third."
Since then Lundin has found many ways to give time to the community. Most recently she served on several boards and committees working to bring the YMCA to Dodge. Now that that project is winding down, she thought she'd try and run for school board again.
"I just thought it might be time," she said.
Besides the recent free time, another reason that Lundin decided to run is because she recognizes what a turbulent and challenging time it is for educators right now. With funding and budget cuts, not enough teachers and not enough space for all the students.
"For much of my life I have worked as a law judge," Lundin said, "so I think I'd be good at looking at all sides of an issue, and helping to keep the peace if things get heated."
Lundin said she didn't have any specific issues she wanted to work on during her term, if elected, just whatever comes before the school board.
"I can't see the future, so I have no idea what issues we'll have to face," she said. "But I'll do my research and be a voice for the community if they elect me."
Lundin and her husband, Larry Daniels, have both had children in the Dodge City schools, although they have since graduated.
Lundin worked for Lundin and Daniels law firm for many years, but is taking some time to herself at the moment to handle her parents estate, and give back to her community.
"I am lucky to have this time," she said, "and I'm glad to be doing some good for others while I have it."
