About the event
1. Bowl for Kids' Sake is the largest source of funds for Big Brother Big Sisters (BBBS), a non-profit organization that serves local children facing adversity. This year, the event will be held March 23 and 24 at Spare Tyme Bowl in Dodge City.
"We wouldn't be able to exist without this event," said Jenny Fisher, Executive Director of Ford County BBBS.
2. "This is not about competitive bowling at all," Fisher said. "You don't even have to know how to bowl to come out and have a great time. Bowling is just the avenue we use to raise some funds for Big Brothers Big Sisters."
Fisher said a main goal of this year's Bowl for Kids' Sake fundraiser is to involve new people in the fun.
"We have a lot of people who do it every year, but we would love to grow the event and bring in new people," she said.
Last year, BBBS raised just over $45,000 through Bowl for Kids' Sake. All of the money raised stays local and serves children in our community.
3. Big Brothers Big Sisters of Ford County serves the entire community, including Bucklin, Dodge City, Ford, Spearville and Wright.
"If people don't feel they have the time to be a mentor this is a great way to still support the agency and it only takes a couple of hours," Fisher said.
Why you should attend
Community members are asked to gather a team of five or six friends, family members, coworkers, etc. and raise pledges for the bowling event. Fisher said each bowler is asked to raise $100 in pledges. And Fisher acknowledged that $100 might seem like a lot of cash for one person to raise, but she said previous participants have found it easy to do.
"If you get $10 from 10 people that's already $100," she said. "It requires a little bit of effort but people can donate pledges online if they want to."
There's even a system for bowlers to solicit pledges through e-mail.
All bowlers who raise $100 will be able to bowl two games and get a t-shirt. There will also be food and refreshments provided for the teams.
"We want to serve as many children as we can, and these funds allow us to serve local children in one-to-one matches with a Big Brother or Big Sister," Fisher said.
Sponsors for Bowl for Kids' Sake include Cox, CrustBuster Speed King Inc., Blackhills Energy, Cargill, Spare Tyme Bowl, Bowling For Butch, Fraternal Order of Police and UFCW Local Two.
