The Dodge City Conquistadors baseball team closed out their Jayhawk West series with the Seward County Saints with a Sunday afternoon sweep after getting swept Saturday.
The Conqs (15-11, 6-6 Jayhawk West) beat the Saints 2-0 in eight innings and 6-4 on Sunday after getting swept by scores of 4-2 and 8-2 in Saturday's doubleheader.
The Sunday opener was a defensive showdown as neither team could score in the first seven innings of play with Dodge City having only one hit in regulation.
The Conqs scored both runs in the top of the eighth on a RBI fielder's choice by Conner Koepp and Haden Houska later scored on a wild pitch.
Sam Brunner was the winning pitcher in relief of starter Jagger Harjo. Brunner pitched the final 1 2/3 innings, giving up two hits and a walk while striking out three. Harjo gave up five hits and three walks while striking out three in his 6 1/3 innings of work on the mound.
T.J. Looney was the losing pitcher for Seward (13-17, 7-5).
Dodge City scored the first five runs in the nightcap and then held off rallies as the Saints scored single runs in four of the last five innings.
Houska opened up the nightcap with a single and eventually scored on a double play to give the Conqs the early lead.
The Conqs scored four more runs in the top of the second. Connor Ross reached base on an error and eventually scored on a bases-loaded hit by pitch issued to Jerry Lacayo. Houska knocked in another run on a fielder's choice and Koepp hit a two-run triple to make the score 5-0.
The Saints scored single runs on starter Walter Rainwater in the third, fourth and fifth innings to cut the deficit to 5-3. Rainwater gave up eight hits and three earned runs while striking out three to earn the pitching victory.
Dodge City scored its final run of the nightcap on back-to-back doubles by Ross and Shay Lynes.
Seward scored a final run in the bottom of the seventh off Clayton Brewster, who earned the save for Dodge City.
The Saints scored a run in the bottom of the second and three more in the bottom of the third to pull ahead 4-0 off Dodge City ace Ross Vance. Vance gave up 10 hits and four earned runs in six innings of work. Vance struck out three in his complete game.
Dodge City scored a single run in the fifth inning on a RBI groundout by Chris Ramsey and Nick Comito scored the Conqs' run from third base in the sixth on a Saints' error.
Seward scored five runs in the first inning off of Spencer Bedwell to control the second game of the doubleheader. Dodge City cut the margin to 5-2 on a RBI single by Parker Jones in the second and a RBI sacrifice fly in the third by Ross.
The Saints scored single runs in the third fourth and fifth innings to close out the game.
The Conqs host Northern Oklahoma-Enid in a Tuesday afternoon doubleheader at Cavalier Field. The first game is scheduled for a 4:05 p.m. start.
