A Dodge City man accused of hitting a woman over the head with a frying pan and putting her in a chokehold was charged with two counts of attempted second-degree murder Thursday. Ricardo Barnhart, 46, was also charged with aggravated kidnapping as a result of the alleged incident which took place March 19. Because the victim in the case was 38-weeks pregnant, Barnhart also faces an aggravated battery charge on the unborn child. Per Alexa’s Law the state is allowed to prosecute violent crimes committed on the pre-born. In addition, Barnhart is accused of grabbing the woman by the hair and hyperextending her throat, preventing her from being able to breathe, according to court records. He is also accused of putting her in a headlock and repeatedly slapping her in the face. In a separate incident which followed shortly after, Barnhart is accused of "jump kicking" the woman in the face and hitting her in the head with a frying pan, among other accusations. He is also charged with aggravated assault and aggravated endangering of a child. Barnhart's bond is set at $500,000, and his next appearance in court will be March 28 for a preliminary hearing. It was not clear whether or not he had an attorney.
