  • A Dodge City man found guilty of two counts of aggravated indecent liberties with a child was sentenced to 10 years in prison Thursday. Hector Stefanich bond was set at $200,000 following his July 2012 arrest. Defense attorney Louis Podrebarac was appointed to represent Stefanich whose charges stem from incidents that occurred the same month of his arrest. Stefanich, 53, is accused of assaulting a 13-year-old girl, according to court documents. The documents did not identify her by name or spell out the relationship, if any, between the child and Stefanich. A motion to determine whether Stefanich was competent to stand trial was filed in October by his attorney. Court documents revealed that Podrebarac was concerned that his client didn't understand the seriousness of the charges against him. Stefanich claimed the devil's influence had been upon him but God had forgiven him for his actions, according to Podrebarac's motion. The same document also stated that there was concern that Stefanich did not understand right from wrong. Following an evaluation and brief stint in Larned State Hospital, it was decided that he was competent and a contested preliminary hearing was scheduled for January. Prior to the hearing, Stefanich entered into a plea agreement. The initial charges of rape and aggravated indecent liberties with a child were amended to two counts of of the latter charge. He was also advised of the possibility of derportation due to his charges. Stefanich is originally from Argentina, according to court records. In addition to lifetime post-release supervision and registration as a sex offender, Stefanich was sentenced to 61 months for the first charge and 59 months for the second. The sentences willl be served consecutively with the Kansas Department of Corrections.
