A woman from Dodge City who is alleged to have "cruelly" beaten a child has been charged with child abuse and aggravated endangering of a child, according to Ford County District Court records. Bertha Leticia Rayo's charges were filed March 27 and stem from an incident in April 2011. The child was 3 years old at the time of the incident. Assistant Ford County Attorney David Belling said he could not comment on why there was a time lapse between the incident and the filing of charges. The case marks the second round of charges against Rayo involving a child. Rayo plead guilty to helping Aroldo Guerra-Garcia — a man wanted for sexually assaulting a 4-year-old girl — elude authorities in July 2012. The child in both cases is identified by the same initials and birth date in court documents, but Belling said he could not confirm whether or not it was indeed the same child. Rayo listed Guerra-Garcia as her former husband on Ford County Court documents. The relationship between Rayo, Guerra-Garcia and the child in either case was not immediately clear. Rayo plead guilty to interfering with a law enforcement officer Aug. 2 and was sentenced to 11 months in prison Oct. 3. for her role in Garcia-Guerra's failed escape attempt. Garcia-Guerra entered an Alford Plea on charges of aggravated criminal sodomy and aggravated indecent liberties with a child last month. By entering an Alford Plea, a defendant asserts his innocence but also admits there is sufficient evidence against him. Rayo is set to appear in court April 25. The Globe does not release the names of victims in sexual assault cases.
