  • As expected, this past March ended up on the chilly side with several bouts of winter returning. This was the coldest March in Dodge City since 2002. At the Dodge City airport the average temperature for the month was 42.3 degrees which is 2.1 degrees below the climatological normal. The warmest reading occurred on the 15th when the mercury rose to 83 which established a new record high temperature for the day. The coldest temperature of 13 degrees was observed on the 26th.
In Dodge City it snowed on 6 days with 2.1 measured at the airport but there was a bit more that fell in town. For the season there has been 25.5 which is above the normal of 21.1 .
Precipitation from the snow and rain for the month totaled only 0.26 at the Dodge City airport which is below the normal of 1.33 . For the past 12 months the precipitation is a little over 5.5  inches below normal. However the snows that fell, especially in February, have created a favorable growing profile in the soils for plants and grasses at least for the early spring. Additional rains will definitely be needed to sustain growth into the warm season.
Although there were a couple of windy days, the average wind for March was 12.8 MPH and was significantly below the normal of 14.5 MPH. This is the 9th month in a row of below average monthly wind speeds. It is interesting that only 2 out of the last 15 months have had above average wind. The strongest wind this march occurred on the 10th when a north wind of 55 MPH was recorded.
Looking ahead to April there will be a few more mornings with below freezing temperatures. The average date for the last freeze of the spring in Dodge City is April 21. There may also still be a chance for accumulating snow especially during the second week of the month as a cold air source will still be nearby, although uncertainty is fairly high. Severe weather will likely occur during the month, which is typical for this time of year. On average, temperatures should end up around normal although there will be both a few very warm days and also very chilly days. Precipitation should end up at least near normal.
