  • The Dodge City Red Demons opened up their baseball season with a split of their Western Athletic Conference doubleheader against the Hays Indians.
The Indians won the opener 3-1 and the Demons were able to record a 3-0 shutout in the second game to earn the split.
Austin Weiser pitched a complete game one-hitter to record the shut out. Weiser struck out five and walked five to pick up the victory. No Indian went past second base during the game.
"Weiser pitched great today," said DCHS baseball head coach Daniel Rogers. "He threw strikes and used his defense. He was able to get out of situations and was a bulldog on the mound today. I was very pleased with how he threw. He had been throwing well in the intrasquad game, but to dominate a team like Hays impressed us and we hope it carries on during the season."
The Red Demons scored their first run in the nightcap in the top of the third on a sacrifice fly by Jordan Doan.
Dodge City (1-1, 1-1) got two more runs in the top of the fourth. Gideon Wells hit a RBI single before the Red Demons manufactured a run when Jackson Oldham scored from third on a double steal with Weiser.
Doan was the losing pitcher in the first game, giving up only one earned run in six innings of work. He struck out three and walked four.
The Indians (3-1, 1-1) scored two unearned runs in the third that was helped by two Dodge City errors.
The Red Demons scored one run in the top of the sixth when Weiser scored from third base on a passed ball, but Hays scored a run in the bottom of the inning to close out the game.
"We came out and played hard in game one, but we had a couple of mistakes got them," Rogers said. "We knew we would make mistakes in our first game, but I was pleased with the way we bounced back and played after that.
"Doan pitched a great game. He gave us a chance to win and we were very happy with his first performance of the year."
The Demons' next action is Friday afternoon against Wichita South at Demon Field. The first game of the doubleheader is scheduled to start at 4 p.m.
