The Dodge City Red Demons golf team got a last-minute chance to play on the course that will host the Class 6A state tournament in the middle part of May.
The Red Demons more than got a good look at the Meadowbrook Country Club, they claimed the Shawnee Mission South tournament at the course by 17 strokes against its nearest competitor, Olathe East. Shawnee Mission Northwest was third at 323.
"It was a good start and the main thing is that we had a chance to play the golf course where we would play if we qualified for state," said DCHS golf head coach Jim Mapel. "That was the purpose of the trip to get around the course a couple of times and see how it plays. The icing on the cake was that they played well today and got a victory."
Brad Hutton and Jace Larson led the way for the Demons after shooting 74 apiece. Hutton finished second and Larson third. Zach Kirby and Brayden Winans each shot 77 and finished sixth and seventh, respectively. Zach Norton closed out the Demons' scoring with an 83.
The Demons' next action will be Saturday with a dual at Garden City. Tee time is 9 a.m.
