  • Demon squads finish second at Liberal track meet

  • The Dodge City High track squads picked up a number of first place medals Friday at the Redskin Invitational at Liberal High School.
    The Red Demons claimed six events and finished second in the final team standings to the host-Redskins. Liberal scored 211 points as a team to Dodge City’s 142. Perryton (Texas) finished third with 61, followed by Holcomb (44), Hugoton (36), Hooker (Okla.) (20), Guymon (Okla.) (12) and Garden City (1).
    The Lady Demons won six events and also finished second to Liberal in the team standings with 140.5 points. The Lady Redskins scored 159 points to win the meet. Perryton was third with 104.5, followed by Hugoton (59), Guymon (34), Holcomb (27) and Garden City (17).
    Bryce Sonday and Oscar Carmona won two events apiece for the Red Demons in boys action. Sonday won in the shot put (47-11 1/2) and the discus (168-2); while Carmona won the 1,600 (2:04.23) and the 3,200 (4:40.32).
    Angel Viveros claimed the Demons’ other individual event win, claiming the 3,200 (10:25.00). The 4x100 relay team of Blaik Middleton, Tyler Trent, Trace Pike and Dominic Randall won their event in a time of 44.96.
    Dodge City boys who finished in the top three included Elder Colindres (1,600, second, 2:06.27; 1,600, third, 4:57.56), Brennan Tate (shot put, second, 43-11; discus, second, 144-6), Jacob Harshberger (discus, third, 133-1), Pike (high jump, third, 5-10) and Trent (long jump, third, 20-8 1/4; triple jump, third, 41-2). The 4x400 relay team of finished second in 3:36.00.
    Summer Wilson led the way for the Lady Demons, winning three events on the day (100 hurdles, 15.70; high jump, 5-2; long jump, 16-10).
    Other Dodge City girls individual winners include Jesse Harshberger in the pole vault (8-5) and Katrina Roenfeldt in the javelin (102-10). The 4x100 relay squad of Wilson, Flax, Dezera Johnson and Harshberger also won their race in a time of 52.27.
    Lady Demon individuals who finished in the top three of their events included Brekk Flax (100, second, 12.88; 200, second, 29.98), Paige Bangerter (high jump, second, 4-10), Chandra Sain (pole vault, second, 8-5), Macy Mock (300 hurdles, third, 53.84). The 4x400 relay of Sadie Unruh, Mariah Rodriguez, Bangerter and Harshberger finished third at 4:30.28.
    The next meet will be Tuesday at Great Bend. The meet will start at 4 p.m.
